Allow me to take a moment to introduce myself. I am the owner, director, and primary provider for Burke Behavioral Health LLC. As I write this I'm in my office and imagining myself extending my hand to you in greeting [smiling warmly]. If you were here, I would offer you a seat in one of the two most comfortable chairs in my office. With your permission, I sit across from you and offer you an introduction.
Licensure: I am licensed as a Clinical Psychologist to provide services in the State of Illinois. To review the status of my licensure, you may visit the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation website, click on "Professional Regulation License Lookup," select "Psychologist Clinical" from the list, and enter my name.
Professional Organizations and Ethics: I am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychology-Law Society(AP-LS), and the International Society for Mental Health Online (ISMHO). As a member of APA, I adhere to the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2002). As a member of AP-LS, any forensic work I do is guided by the current Forensic Specialty Guidelines and informed by their proposed revisions. Online counseling services are guided by ISMHO's Suggested Principles for the Online Provision of Mental Health Services.
Education: I earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology at the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale (SIUC) Department of Psychology. I then completed a Clinical Internship at the SIUC Counseling Center. Both are accredited by the American Psychological Association for training in specifically clinical psychology.
Training in the Delivery of Online Counseling: I have a Certificate in Cybercounselling through Worldwide Therapy Online Inc. in conjunction with the University of Toronto School of Social Work. The program was designed by leaders in the field of online therapy, both in terms of research and service delivery.
Experience: In addition to my experience working in the SIUC Counseling Center and Clinical Center, I have also provided psychological services in community mental health centers, an evaluation center, a psychiatric hospital, and in an adolescent forensic setting. I moved into private practice in March 2007.
Other information that may be of interest:
I have co-authored articles based on my research on language use and identity, uses of journaling, the effects of traumatic experiences on our thoughts, and relationship of creativity to our values.
In between undergraduate and graduate studies in psychology, I also explored one of my other passions by obtaining a Masters of Music degree in Opera and Music Theater at the SIUC School of Music. The methods of exploring and understanding individual people of all sorts on the stage was a major influence on my graduate work in psychology, where I focused on seeing each person as a unique, valued individual, from a non-judgmental stance.
In both therapy and psychological evaluation, I integrate rigorous scientific and clinical methods that show demonstrated effectiveness with an individualized, subjective understanding of each of my clients.
From time to time, I contract with other licensed professionals to provider services that I do not personally provide, such as some types of evaluations and therapy for children. To reduce your cost, I also sometimes utilize the services of master's level clinicians to assist with psychological testing and select other services. I ensure that all clinicians and providers working for or with Burke Behavioral Health are qualified and adhere to all applicable laws and professional standards.
